Basic Design

The basic design of a building is the first major decision made and it will control the cost of the entire project.  Some of the decisions incorporated into the basic design are:

1.  Size
2.  Number of stories
3.  Type of structure (wood, masonry, steel, glu-lam, metal building,
     or a combination of these)
4.  Type of roof
5.  Location on lot
6.  ADA Compliance (elevator, ramps, slab on grade, etc.)
7.  Expandability (preparation for the future)
8.  Multi-purpose or formal sanctuary
9.  Kitchen or servery
10. Etc.

These decisions must be made within the cost parameters established by the Feasibility and Finance Committee and will determine approximately 80% of the cost of the building.  These decisions and determinations should be made prior to hiring an architect if possible.  An architect, with his engineers, is essential in designing a beautiful structure to house your ministry, but only the church can determine the ministry, and the ministry should always determine the size and configuration of the building.
